A mob today pelted stones at a police jeep when the cops tried to lift a road blockade on NH 60 at Karikhya village in Birbhum district.

A top district police officer said villagers blocked the arterial road demanding better traffic management after two local youths escaped from being knocked down by a speeding vehicle in the area, which is on the outskirts of the district headquarters town of Suri.

As a police force, consisting of the local police station officers, went to the spot and reasoned with the villagers they agreed to lift the hour-long blockade.

However, as the vehicles started moving an altercation soon began among the policemen present at the spot and a section of the mob accused the police of highhandedness.

In the ensuing melee, a police jeep was stoned and its windscreen smashed, the officer said.

Police brought the situation under control and arrested two persons for attacking and instigating the mob.

To a question if any of the police officers of Suri police station or constables were injured in the incident as reported in a section of electronic media, the senior officer said no police personnel were injured.
