Mob sets liquor vends ablaze after two die in road accident

An angry mob today burnt three liquor vends and two vehicles belonging to a liquor contractor in the Dera Baba Nanak town here after two men died after their scooter was hit by a jeep, officials said.

The jeep allegedly belonged to the liquor contractor which led the mob to target the vends, they said.

Sanjiv Kumar (25) and Subegh Singh (30), who were on a scooter, were allegedly hit by a jeep owned by the liquor contractor near a petrol pump on the Batala road here around noon, police said.

Both died on the spot. A furious mob then set three liquor shops and two vehicles on fire, they said.
 

They first burnt the vehicles and then liquor vends at Purana Bus Stand, Old Chungi and New Bus Stand areas, police said.

SSP, Batala, Opinderjit Singh Ghuman and other senior officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
