There were 15,160 people with disabilities in Mizoram as per the 2011 Census out of which 813 people were given disability pension even as the state observed World Disabled Day today.

Office of State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities said that 142 disabled people were given job in the state government while 25 educated disabled people were given stipend and 788 students with disabilities were given stipend.

Though awareness about the problems of PWDs was now thought to be high in the state, only few churches have ramps and toilet facilities for disabled people.

State Social Welfare Minister P C Lalthanliana recently said that there were still a number of posts reserved for PWDs yet to be filled under the state government.
