A court here today acquitted former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's longtime interior minister Habib El-Adly of corruption charges in the last of several cases that have kept him behind bars, paving the way for his release.
Cairo Criminal Court cleared El-Adly of charges of using his political influence to acquire illicit gains amounting to 181 million Egyptian pounds.
The former minister has faced a number of serious charges since the 2011 revolution saw him removed from his post. Mubarak and El-Adly were both charged with causing the death of protesters during that uprising. An initial conviction saw both men sentenced to life in prison, but in November 2014 a retrial found them innocent.

Today's verdict marks the final trial El-Adly is currently facing, according to his lawyer, Essam El-Batawy, who told Ahram Online his client will be released "within days."
In February, El-Adly and former prime minister Ahmed Nazeef were also acquitted in the retrial of another corruption case.
They were accused of wasting public money by awarding a 92 million Egyptian pound-contract for the manufacture of licence plates to a German firm without announcing about it in public tender as stated by law.
