Nine Deekshithars sentenced to one month imprisonment

A local court today sentenced nine Deekshithars (priests) of the Nataraja temple here to one month imprisonment in a case filed against them for allegedly attacking and threatening to kill their colleague Parameswara Deekshithar in 2012.

Judicial Magistrate Maruthupandian found the nine guilty and sentenced them to one month imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 2000 each.

They obtained bail, saying they were going on appeal.

According to the charge sheet, the nine assaulted Parameswara who made a written request during a meeting to invite the Kanchi seer for the consecration of Pandi Nayaka Subramaniar temple.

There was an altercation and he was assaulted, it said.
