In its bid to establish Odia as the official language by August 15, the Odisha government has promulgated an ordinance after amending the Odisha Official Language Act of 1954.
Odisha Chief secretary AP Padhi informed about the state government's ordinance, The Odisha Official Language (Amendment) Ordinance 2016, in this regard.
"The Ordinance empowers the state government to make rules, review and monitor whether the direction contained in the sub-section 2 of Section 2 of the 1954 Act has been implemented," said law minister Arun Kunmar Sahoo.

Padhi said The Ordinance makes mandatory use of Odia in all official communication.
Stating that the earlier Act did not have powers to frame rules, law minister Sahoo said this Ordinance will help the state government to successfully implement the 1954 act.
The ordinance got the Governor's assent yesterday.
