Opposition parties lashed out at the Trinamool Congress government over the resignation of the State Elelction Commissioner S R Upadhyay today.

"Resignation of the SEC vindicates BJP's charge that under TMC rule, one cannot conduct free and fair polls. Upadhaya's action shows what kind of immoral pressure he must have faced from the TMC government. The Chief Minister owes an apology to the people of Bengal and to those who have been injured," BJP national secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said.

Apparently under pressure from political parties, West Bengal state election commissioner S R Upadhyay today submitted his resignation to Governor K N Tripathi even as counting of ballots for last Saturday's civic polls was yet to be taken up.

CPI(M) state secretariat member Gautam Deb said the resignation shows how TMC has been trying to "control" the SEC.

"What more can I say. Everything is before the masses. The incident shows how TMC has been trying to control the SEC," he said.

State Congress leader Manas Bhunia said that SEC should have resigned long back.

"We feel SEC should have resigned long back. The resignation shows how the basic democratic and constitutional norms are under threat from the TMC regime," Bhunia said.
