The Tamil Nadu government on Friday said over 1,400 tonnes of plastic have been used in laying 935 km of roads in the state in the last five years.

This was part of efforts to put plastic wastage to 'effective use' to reduce environmental degradation, Municipal Administration and Rural Development Minister S P Velumani told the state assembly.

"During the last five years, 1476.40 tonnes of plastic waste have been utilised in laying 935.23 km length of roads with financial assistance from general fund and Government special fund," he said.

To promote collection, segregation and shredding of plastic waste, self-help groups were trained and engaged in these activities.

Such road laying in corporations and municipalities was being done based on plastic waste technology, Velumani said.

Further, the state government has sanctioned six modern abattoirs for the corporations of Tirupur, Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli at an estimated cost of about Rs 74 crore, Velumani added.
