Panther found killed on railway track in Jaipur

A two-year-old panther was found killed today on a railway track here in Dara village under the Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve (MHTR) area, a forest official said today.

The incident took place on the intervening night of Wednesday and today along the Mumbai-Delhi railway track in Dara village, said Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) Anil Yadav.

"The panther is likely to have got hit by the front side of railway engine. It bears the marks of fatal injuries on head, stomach and tail," Yadav said.

He added that the carcass has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of his death.

 

Notably, panther is included in the schedule-1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act-1972.

In September last year, a sloth bear was also found killed at the same spot in Dara village after being hit by a moving train in the MHTR.

Around two year old panther, a wildlife schedule -1 category protected animal, was on intervening Wednesday night killed on the spot after being hit by moving train on Delhi Mumbai track in Dara village falling under Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve (MHTR) in Kota district. The carcass of the panther was today morning recovered from the track after the railway guard informed of the carcass to the forest department authorities.

The forest authorities were informed of carcass by railway guard around 10 o'clock today morning following which the body was recovered and sent for postmortem by medical board in Kota, the ACF said.

Around 7 kilometers long Mumbai Delhi railway track passes through the forest of MHTR where the area where newly relocated MT-1 tiger habitats is fenced, around 1 to 2 kilometers of track is still unfenced.

Earlier in September last year, a sloth bear of around nine years old was killed at the spot in Dara village after being got hit by moving train on the track. In 2003, the tiger popularly known as broken tail was killed in the same manner after being hit by moving train.

Expressing concern over killing of the panther, Brajesh Vijayvergya, a wildlife activist in Kota demanded an immediate joint action plan by ministry of forest and railway to check such incidents on the railway track. Panther is a wildlife schedule -1 category protected animal.
