: A PIL has been filed in Madras High Court seeking to bring in an amendment to Representation of People Act that only one person from a family either in a national party or in a regional party should contest the Assembly or Parliament elections.
Advocate R Balasubramanian, who appeared in person before a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Kumar Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan, argued that legal heirs of political party leaders be barred by contesting the polls.
He also submitted there should be a ban on second generation leaders from garnering or holding positions in the government.

He contended that after Independence, several leaders at the national and regional level had brought their family members into politics and groomed them to top positions.
The First Bench, which heard the matter today, reserved its orders.
