A mob today set on fire a police jeep and blocked the NH-203 here when a group of lawyers were protesting against an alleged assault on one of the members of the Bhubaneswar Bar Association here.

The incident took place this afternoon when police reached the spot to pacify the agitators, who squatted on Kalpana Square blocking the NH-203.

The mob suddenly turned violent and set the jeep on fire before pulling out two on-duty officers from the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle received head injuries due to pelting of stones by the mob, police said.

The agitators were demanding stern action against the police personnel who had allegedly beat up Nihar Ranjan Sethi, a lawyer on Wednesday night.

Police Commissioner R P Sharma and DCP Nitinjit Singh reached the spot following the incident and held discussions with the agitating lawyers.

The lawyers had been on the agitation since Friday as a mark of protest over the incident.

The lawyers said they would continue the agitation till the accused policemen were not arrested.
