Police today said they are probing allegation that a woman was sold for Rs 60,000 in the presence of panchayat members and police officials here.

An investigation is in progress into the allegation made by a certain section of media that a woman was allegedly sold off after an auction on Friday in Chatari town here, Station House Officer Brajnesh Yadav said.

The police, however, have not received any such complaint or have knowledge about the incident, he added.

Yadav said the woman, who was allegedly "sold off", had refused to marry a man, identified as Sanjay, after he turned up at her residence in an inebriated condition.

"It was due to this reason that there has been some tension in the village," he claimed.
