A group of engineering students vandalised the local police station and damaged four vehicles early today, alleging police had failed to take action against some drunk persons who beat up a student on the campus.
Kalyani SDPO Chandrasekhar Bardhan said a large number of students of Kalyani Government Engineering College raided the Kalyani police station and broke furniture and computers and damaged four police vehicles.
Police resorted a mild lathicharge to disperse the students, the SDPO said.

He said college registrar Bishnupada Biswas, who accompanied the students to the police station, was arrested under non-bailable section and produced in a local court today.
The police has collected names of 10 students who were involved in the vandalism and are making enquiries about them.
Students of the college said they first went to the police station around 10.30 pm yesterday to lodge a complaint against some local people who beat up a student after he protested against consumption of liquor on the campus.
They complained that the police instead of taking a written complaint from them assured that they would look into the matter shortly, but ultimately did not act which prompted them to go to the police station again to demonstrate.
However, local sources said, on the contrary to what the college authorities are claiming, a student beat up some villagers who had protested against his purchasing liquor from an unauthorised shop outside the campus.
