A team of policemen put their lives on the line and leaped into the flames to rescue a 21-year-old woman who was allegedly set afire by her mother-in-law in Fatehpur Beri area of the national capital.
Yesterday, the Central Police Control Room received a call that a woman was locked and set on fire in a room by her mother-in-law.
"The information was immediately marked to PCR Van E-36 which rushed to the spot and saw the house in flames.
"The PCR staff broke open the door and doused the flames using fire extinguisher and rescued the woman, a native of West Champaran (Bihar), who presently lives in servant quarter," said a senior police official.
Meanwhile, local police also reached the spot and recorded the victim's statement who said she lived with her family and husband works as a gardener.
"The victim in her statement said that yesterday her husband left for duty at about 7.30 AM along with her father. At around 3 PM her mother-in-law asked her to switch on the water motor. As she entered the room to switch on the motor installed there, her mother-in-law closed the door from outside and threw a burning matchstick inside the room.
"As the fire spread, she rang up her husband who in turn informed her father who made a PCR call," said the official.
A case has been registered at Fatehpur Beri police station and further investigation is in progress.
