Protest against move to construct dam across Bhavani river

Various political parties and organisations today decided to form a 'human chain' on January 21 here, to protest against Kerala government's alleged move to construt a check dam across Bhavani river, which would lead to serious water crisis in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Erode.

The decision was taken at a meeting organised by Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhakam (TPDK), in which local leaders of various political parties, including DMK and VCK, Tamil organisations, trade bodies and also farmers associations participated.

The meeting also decided to stage protest demonstration at the construction site on January 29, TPDK general secretary, K Ramakrishnan said.

It was reported that Kerala has started ground works to build a 12-foot tall check dam across Bhavani at Attapadi, some 32 Kms from Tamil Nadu Border and dumped construction materials, he said.
 

Meanwhile, 40 MDMK workers, led by its youth wing secretary, Eswaran staged a picketing at K G Chavadi on Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, by squatting in front of Kerala government bus, police said.

Even as they raised slogans against the move of Kerala, police arrested them.
