The Rajasthan Women Commission has directed the district authorities of Pali, Jalore and Barmer to look into reports of cutting of women's hair during night hours by unidentified persons as part of some superstitious activity.

The Commission took cognisance of media reports about a spurt of such cases in western districts of Rajasthan wherein women alleged that someone cut a little bunch of their hair at night.

The social media is also abuzz with many superstitious messages, creating panic among the local people. The people approached the police but the forces were unable to expose those behind such acts, it said.

"I have written to collector and SPs of Barmer, Pali and Jalore districts to investigate such cases and expose those behind such developments. This has created panic among people in those areas. The content of the messages doing the rounds on social media is impossible in modern era and those who are doing this need to be exposed," Suman Sharma, chairperson of the commission, told PTI.

The incidents have been reported in many rural areas of Jodhpur, Bikaner, Nagaur, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Pali and Jalore over the last few days.

The women complained that they got unconscious after the accused cut their hair and then disappeared.

"We went to the regions where such incidents were reported, but found no one suspicious. Night patrolling has been increased to check such incidents," Jodhpur Rural SP Ravi said.

SP Barmer, Gagandeep Singla said although investigations have been taken up to probe such incidents, no concrete evidence could be gathered.

"We have asked people to stay away from rumours," he said.
