Rs 9.91 cr gold smuggled from Sri Lanka seized

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence today seized 33.35 kg of gold bars valued at Rs 9.91 crore, allegedly smuggled from Sri Lanka, and detained two persons for questioning.

Based on specific intelligence inputs, officials raided a house in the crowded Triplicane locality and recovered the gold. While 30.86 kg of the seized gold was of 24 carat, 2.49 kg was 21 carat.

"Clinching evidence to the effect that the seized gold has been smuggled into Chennai from Sri Lanka has been recovered and the persons intercepted have also admitted to it," M M Parthiban, Additional Director General said here in a release.
 

Also, valuable documents have been seized which establish the presence of a "huge hawala racket" behind the persons involved in gold smuggling, the official said.
