Season's first snowfall in Shimla

The city witnessed the season's first snowfall bringing cheers to tourists, while farmers heaved a sigh of relief as widespread showers in mid and lower hills broke the prolongeddry spell.

While upper areas of Shimla recorded 3 cm of snowfall, the adjoining resorts of Kufri and Fagu had 5 cm to 10 cm of precipitation.

The mighty Rohtang Pass and adjoining areas, Kalpa in Kinnaur district and Dalhousie in Chamba gauged 12 cm, 10 cm and 3 cm of snowfall while Solan, Palampur and Dharamsala had 9 mm, 7 mm and 4 mm of rains.

The sky remained heavily overcast and high velocity chilly winds swept the region causing sharp fall in the day temperature that dropped by five to 10 degrees Celsius.
 

Shimla, Solan and Kalpa recorded a high of 10.7 degrees, 10 degrees and 5.8 degrees Celsius, six to 10 degrees below normal while Una was the hottest in the region with maximum temperature at 20.7 degrees Celsius, followed by Bhuntar 16.6 degrees, Sundernagar15.5 degrees, Dharamsala 15.2 degrees and Nahan 14.1 degrees Celsius.

The snowfall increased the tourist rush and the hotels of the Himachal Tourism Development Corporation and other hotels in the central areas of Shimla were packed to capacity.
