Sister Nirmala, the head of the Missionaries of Charity (MoC) founded by Mother Teresa, was buried in the St John's Church cemetery here this evening.

Archbishop of Calcutta Father Thomas D'Souza and several priests, sisters and representatives of the MoC from various states and abroad were present when her body was laid to rest at around 7.20 PM.

Earlier in the day, thousands of people flocked to the 'Mother House', headquarters of the MoC here to pay their last respect to the 81-year-old Sister who passed away yesterday after suffering from prolonged heart-related ailments.

After the morning mass, the MoC Superior General's body was taken from St John's Church at Sealdah, where it had been kept for the night, to the Mother House.

Her body was placed there in a glass casket, beside Mother Teresa's marble tomb where visitors made a beeline to have a last glimpse of their beloved Sister.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the Mother House in the evening to attend the funeral mass, an MoC official said.

Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee, city police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha, Howrah Mayor Rathin Chakraborty, Trinamool Congress' Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien also went.

Banerjee offered her final homage and along with others took part in singing a Rabindra Sangeet "Alo amar alo".

She participated in the funeral procession as the body was taken from the Mother House to St John's Church cemetery for the last rites.

On March 13, 1997, six months before Mother Teresa's death, Sister Nirmala was selected the Superior General of the MoC.

Sister Mary Prema was elected to succeed Sister Nirmala during a general chapter held in Calcutta in April 2009.
