Six sentenced to life imprisonment

The Allahabad High Court has sentenced six persons to life imprisonment in a 33-year-old murder case in Hardoi and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each of them.

A trial court had acquitted them way back in 1982 of various charges including murder.

The high court bench here also directed that out of the fine realised from the accused, Rs 1 lakh shall be paid to legal representatives of deceased Satya Pal Singh as compensation.

The bench comprising justices Ajay Lamba and Akhtar Husain Khan passed the judgement recently on a state appeal filed in 1983, challenging the sessions (trial) court judgement and order dated November 27, 1982, acquitting all 10 accused of various charges including murder.
 

According to the prosecution, the crime took place on October 3, 1981, in a village under Mallawan police station around 4 PM when the convicted persons assaulted five people using firearms and batons over rivalry in which Satya Pal Singh had died.

After hearing the state appeal, the court convicted accused Onkar Singh, Ram Chandra Singh, Om Prakash Singh, Ram Chandra, Ram Singh and Ranvir Singh and sentenced them.

During the pendency of appeal, accused Ram Swaroop Singh, Jwala Singh, Lalji Singh and Ram Roop Singh had died.
