Smita Nagaraj takes over as UPSC member

Senior IAS officer Smita Nagaraj took over as member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), that conducts civil services examination to select country's bureaucrats.

Nagaraj, 59, was appointed to the post with effect from December 1 for a period of six years or until she attains the age of 65 years, an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.

Her last posting was Director General (Acquisition) in the Defence Ministry.

Nagaraj is a 1984 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre.

Her tenure at the UPSC will be till September 21, 2023, the order said.
 

With her appointment, the strength of the UPSC has gone up to eight.

The UPSC, headed by a chairman (Prof David R Syiemlieh at present), can have a maximum of 10 members.

The Commission conducts the civil services examination annually in three stages -- preliminary, mains and interview -- to select officers for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.
