Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today described sports as one of the thrust areas of his government, and said that a dedicated sports university will be set up here.

Speaking at the felicitation ceremony of triumphant teams of the 8th Hockey India Sub-Junior National Championship, Sonowal said the state government has decided to establish the "exclusive" sports varsity at Chabua, realising the immense potential of sporting activities in Assam.

"Sports has been one of the thrust areas of the state government, as the present dispensation has been taking several steps for the promotion and development of sports in the state," he said.

The chief minister said the Assam government is on the threshold of starting indigenous sports events at all villages from this month.

Congratulating the players for helping Assam emerge victorious in the championship, Sonowal, who was earlier sports minister at the Centre, said such feats act as a catalyst to the government's bid of making the state a hub of India's sporting activities.

He also advocated a collective approach between the state government and the people at large for promotion of sports.
