Later, students enraged over the lathicharged even blocked the traffic at Chandigarh chowk for more than one hour, causing huge traffic jam on the highway.

Students of three private colleges lifted the blockade after district officials assured to resolve their issue at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh condemned the "brutal" lathicharge by the police on students, which left several of them seriously injured, while they were demanding scholarships.

In a statement issued here today, Capt Amarinder demanded strict action against the officials responsible for resorting to such "brute force" against the peaceful students and an apology from the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal for the "brutal police excesses" today.

Holding the state government responsible for today's incident, the former Chief Minister said, had the scholarships not been delayed to the students they would not have been forced to come on roads. He regretted that the government instead of listening to their problems resorted to brute use of force.
