Sugar surges on fresh demand

The approval of 17 per cent hike by the government for sugarcane paid by the mills to the farmers also affected the price sentiments, traders said.

Small sugar (S-30) surged by Rs 50/49 per quintal to Rs 3,371/3,431 from Thursday's closing level of Rs 3,321/3,382.

Medium sugar (M-30) climbed by Rs 32/30 per quintal to Rs 3,402/3,481 as against Rs 3,370/3,451 yesterday.

The following are today's closing rates for sugar (per quintal) with the previous rates given in brackets:

Small sugar (S-30) quality: Rs 3,371/3,431 (Rs 3,321/3,382).

Medium sugar (M-30) quality: Rs 3,402/3,481 (Rs 3,370/3,451).
