The birth anniversary of renowned Bengali poets Ravindra Nath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam was jointly observed with fervour here in the Nepalese capital today.

Songs based on the poems of Tagore and Islam were presented by noted Bangladeshi musicians during a programme organised by the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu to celebrate Rabindra-Nazrul Jayanti 2016.

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae, Nepal Army chief Rajendra Chhetri were among the dignitaries, who attended the cultural show hosted by Bangladesh ambassador Ms Mashfee Binte Shams.

On the occasion, ambassador Shams said that both the great Bengali poets Tagore (1861-1941) and Islam (1899-1976), also known as the 'National Poet of Bangladesh', have great place in the hearts of Bangladeshi people.

"This year, the deadly terrorist attack in Bangladesh overshadowed the celebrations of these poets in the country," she said.

"Both of the poets stood for the cause of humanity, peace and freedom," she said.
