Tata Steel today observed World Forestry Day to spread awareness about the significance of forests in human lives.

A programme was organised on the theme "Snakes and Friends" to spread awareness about snakes and forests. Several school students also participated in a drawing competition on the occasion.

"The subject chosen by Tata Steel for the World Forestry Day is very interesting. New species of snakes are being discovered everyday and we need to understand the benefits we get from it," Chief Guest of the function and MLA from Jagannathpur Geeta Koda said.

"Snakes are our friends and they help in maintaining ecological balance. This is our small contribution to National Biodiversity Target. Such programmes will create awareness and lead to effective conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem," Tata Steel General Manager Pankaj Satija said.

Snake catchers from Jamshedpur, N K Singh and Asgar Imam, talked about various myths related to the species, saying most snakes are harmless to humans.
