Tea output dips 4 pc to 451.59 mn kg in Apr-Jul

India's tea production in the first four months of the current financial year decreased by 4 per cent to 451.59 million kg, due to fall in production from northern states.

Tea production in the April-July period in 2013-14 was at 470.83 million kg, according to Tea Board of India data.

The combined output of Assam and West Bengal and other north Indian states fell to 355.60 million kg from 384.37 million kg during the period under review.

Assam and West Bengal are the major tea-producing states, accounting for almost 80 per cent of India's total output.

However, the tea production in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka rose to 95.99 million kg from 86.46 million kg during the period under review.
 

In the year 2013-14, the total tea production of the country stood at 1208.78 million kg.

India is the world's second-largest producer and biggest consumer of tea.
