Unidentified gunmen in Thailand shot dead a pro-government "Red Shirt" poet in broad daylight near a restaurant here today.

The victim, Kamol Duangpasuk, was known as the "Red Shirt Poet" as his poems supported the pro-government Red Shirts movement.

The incident happened when he was walking to his car in a parking lot after having lunch in the busy Lat Phrao district here.

Kamol was found soaked with blood at the scene and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. He was a native of Samut Songkhram province.

Police could not immediately confirm if the killing of the 44-year-old poet, also known by his pen name Mainueng Kor Kuntee, was politically motivated.

Kamol was well known for his poems that were published in the popular Matichon Weekender for years, and he was also a critic of Thailand's controversial royal defamation laws.
