TN govt to set up facilities for shooters in three cities

With a view to encourage state shooters participating in international events, Tamil Nadu government today proposed to set up facilities at a cost of Rs 40 crore in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai.

The decision was taken at a review meeting with senior cabinet colleagues and government officials yesterday, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said in a statement today.

She rued that although shooters contributed 17 of the 64 medals that India bagged in the just concluded Glasgow Commonwealth Games, there were none from Tamil Nadu.

Underlining her government's commitment for the promotion of various sporting activities, she said that it will implement facilities for the marksmen in the three cities at a cost of Rs 40 crore.
 

The Chief Minister said that the government will establish 240 shooting tracks at Tamil Nadu Police Academy at Oonamanchery located near the city, besides buying computerised scoreboard and other related modern accessories.

The government will procure equipment for Skeet and Track and establish 15 shooting tracks each at the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu complexes at Madurai and Coimbatore, she said.
