Jammu and Kashmir police have adopted a new telephony scheme to enhance police-public interface by enabling greater access to the force, right from the field level to its headquarters.
"The scheme will facilitate quicker access to police in their hour of need," Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Prasad said while commissioning the new closed user group system at police headquarters here.
As part of the above system, there will be a fixed permanent telephone number for each police post, station and senior officer, the DGP said.
The numbers, which would be assigned permanently, shall not change even with the transfer of officers, he added.
According to the DGP, complaints that telephones at police stations were found invariably disconnected for non-payment of bills had prompted them to opt for the new system.
"(But) that shall not happen now... As incoming facility is in-built in the system," he said.
The DGP said that, initially the system would cover 781 users, amongst whom are 240 senior officers.
