A post-graduate diploma in computer applications and presently a student of ayurvedic medicine, Pratika said she realized some changes in her only during her high secondary studies. "I came to understand that I am not normal as any other male. I could feel my physical features drifting towards feminine character," she said.
Confused over this development, she consulted a doctor who confirmed she was a transgender. After that she underwent a sex re-assignment surgery in Nov 2011 at Kilpauk Medical College in Chennai, the petitioner said.
She changed her name to Prathika Yashini, got it published in the Government Gazette and then started doing a course in Ayurvedic medicine.
As she needed the name change to be recorded in document already notified in the gazette for employment and for higher studies, she approached authorities with representations but they refused to receive them from her, she alleged.
