The newly developed tree park adjacent to the Tannirbhavi beach was inaugurated by Forests and Environment Minister B Ramanath Rai here today.
The Forests department had developed the tree park with a view to providing entertainment for residents and visitors of Mangaluru, the minister said in his speech.
The park is spread over two parcels of land including nine acres of Gurupura riverfront and 22.5 acres on the beachfront.
The park has plant species from the Western Ghats and a variety of herbal plants.
Mangaluru Deputy Conservator of Forests K T Hanumanthappa said the idea of a Tree Park was to spread awareness on the importance of green cover, development of lung space, conservation of biodiversity and to promote love for nature and its creations.
The park is to have a children's area, a cultural area, a food court and beachfront amenities including an information kiosk, beach volleyball court and beachfront relaxation area with shaded walkways and sitting areas.
A managing committee will be set up for maintaining the park and the entry fee to the park would be reasonable, Hanumanthappa said.
The Forest Department has spent around Rs 2 crore on the project, which is proposed to be set up in all districts.
