Truck drivers outside Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at Uran in neighbouring Raigad district were today lathicharged by police following a clash.

The incident occurred when police tried to break their demonstrations against holding up of their vehicles.

The truck drivers were stranded as their vehicles were stuck up due to ongoing strike by Kalmar operators - special crane operators - in JNPT, Navi Mumbai police said.

When police tried to break the protest, the truck drivers allegedly attacked them with stones and also set on fire a police vehicle and a police booth.

"Police had gone to the spot to break demonstrations being held by truck drivers when they started pelting police with stones in which some policemen were injured, after which police lathicharged them," Navi Mumbai police said.

Around 20-30 drivers were taken into custody and their questioning is on, they said.
