Two constables booked for beating youth to death in Nashik

Two police constables have been booked for allegedly beating a youth to death at village in Igatpuri in the district, police said today.

Constables Sunil Charoskar (45) and Sandeep Zalte (28), attached to Ghoti police station in rural Nashik, have been booked under section 302 (murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC, Additional Superintendent of Police Vishal Gaikwad said.

The official said that according to relatives of deceased, Balu Khodke (26), a member of gram panchayat of Devachi Wadi at Khedgaon-Bhairav village in Igatpuri taluka, was being enquired by the two policemen over selling illegal liquor in the village last evening.
 

"An altercation broke between the constable duo and Khodke when they reached the spot to enquire about sale of illegal liquor. The policemen allegedly hit him severely on head resulting in his death on the spot," the official said.

As soon as the news of the incident spread, furious villagers attacked the constables in which they received minor injuries and are being treated at a private hospital in Nashik, a personnel of Rural Police Control Room said.

The two constables were locked up inside a room by relatives and villagers and were rescued by police after sometime.

Locals also gathered outside the Ghoti police station in the night and demanded that the two constables be booked and arrested.

The situation in the village was under control and deceased's body was sent for postmortem, police said.
