Two get jail term for poisoning elephant

Two Van Gurjars living in Rajaji National Park area were sentenced to two years imprisonment by a local court for poisoning an elephant to death here 11 years ago.

Alijan Gurjar and Bashir alias Bablu were awarded two year jail term each by the Chief Judicial Magistrate yesterday after they were convicted for poisoning an elephant to death in 2002, Counsel for the forest department Rajesh Tripathi said.

Shafi, the third accused in the case was imposed a fine of Rs 1000 for acting as an accomplice in the crime.

Alijan Gurjar and Bashir were arrested in August 2002 after being found in possession of 8 kgs of elephant tusks.
