Two held with gold worth over Rs 28 lakh at airport

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 1.1 kg gold worth over Rs 28 lakh at Sanganer international airport here, custom officials said today.

One passenger coming by Air India flight from Dubai had kept 700 grams gold wires in his strolly (baggage), the Customs department sources said.

Whereas another passenger deboarding an Air Arabia flight, had wrapped gold weighing about 491 grams in aluminium foil stitched on a quilt, they said.

Both passengers were detained for interrogation under the Custom Act, they said.

When contacted Deputy Commissioner of Customs (Airport), Honhar Singh told PTI, that Despite a ban on import of gold, 13 kg of gold has been seized in last two months, from different passengers coming from international flights, specially from Dubai and other parts of Gulf.
