Two sentence to RI for peddling ganja in Odisha

Two persons were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 12 years by a court here for peddling ganja five years ago.

District and Sessions Judge Malaya Ranjan Das convicted Rajendra Mallick and his brother-in-law Prafulla Mallick under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and pronounced the sentence yesterday.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs one lakh each on the convicts while pronouncing the judgement after hearing five witnesses and examining material evidences.

Both the convicts, belonging to Pipili in Puri district, were arrested five years ago and ganja seized from them by excise personnel.

According to the prosecution, the duo was arrested near Digapahandi in Ganjam district on July 2, 2011 with 300 kilograms of ganja. The excise personnel had seized the contraband while it was being illegally transported in a car.
 

Excise personnel had also seized the vehicle in which the ganja was being transported illegally.
