Sounding optimistic about crucial UN conference in Paris later this year, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar today said to overcome the threat of climate change "joint efforts" from all the nations will be required and Paris will show the way.
"I am an optimist that we will deal with climate change threat effectively and will overcome it but it requires a joint effort from all countries and Paris is the beginning of the story of the efforts to be made by the mankind," Javadekar said.
The Union Environment minister said that finance and technology should be provided to foster sustainable development in emerging nations for more aggressive actions on climate change.
He was addressing at the 17th World Congress on Environment Management organised by Institute of Directors here today. The theme of the Congress was "Environmental Governance - Transition to a Green Economy".
What is now changing and one good feature about the road to Paris is that all the countries of the world have taken a pledge and have accepted that they will take action on their own and will present a graph of their actions in the form of Intended Nationally Determined Contributions(INDCs), he said.
"That's a real change, that's the real hope and that's where I feel that Paris will be a success because every country is participating, every country is taking pledges and that's a good sign. Let us welcome it, let us celebrate it. Let us not start a blame-game on this," he said.
Javadekar noted that India has 17 per cent of the world's population and 17 per cent of the world's cattle population and both requires land, water and food, On the other hand, India has 2.5 per cent of the world's landmass but the country has only 4 per cent of water.
"We must respect that every country's action will be different in the context of achieving sustainable growth and sustainable development, but by sustainable measures," the Union Minister said.
