An undertrial prisoner in Murshidabad district died in custody today after he was beaten up allegedly by policemen escorting him from court to the correctional home here, police said.

The victim, Jakir Hossain, was beaten up allegedly by the policemen when he was not willing to get down from the police van at the correctional home after he was brought back from the SDJM's court at Kandi.

The authorities of the correctional home did not want to accept him as his condition was not good because of the assault, police said.

The policemen escorting the undertrial then left him outside the correctional home and went away.

Local police took him to hospital where the doctors declared him dead on arrival, police said.

Hossain, a resident of Rameswarpur village under Kandi police station, had been arrested a few days ago for alleged possession of crude bombs.
