Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan today said preemptive and proactive measures should be taken to maintain law and order in the state in the wake of panchayat elections later this year.

He directed senior officials to keep an eye on sensitive issues and visit such areas to resolve any problems that might arise, according to a government release here.

"All the district magistrates and police chiefs should conduct monthly review meetings of law and order and senior officials should keep a stern eye on the senstive issues and visit the concerned areas to resolve the problems," the chief secretary, who reviewed development work and law and order situation of the state, said.

He directed additional SPs and circle officers to personally visit at least one police station every month and review the cases and the progress in investigation.

Police stations should be equipped with vehicles so that personnel can reach the crime scene promptly, he was quoted as saying, in an official release here.

On the development front, he asked for giving momentum to implementation of welfare schemes and completion of projects within a set time-frame while maintaining quality.

The officials showing laxity in implementing development projects should be identified and penalised, he stressed.

He asked officials to work in a manner so that people have complete faith in the government.

Ranjan said directives have already been issued for having two English-medium schools at the primary level in all districts and maintaining hygiene in hospitals for which adequate funds have also been released.
