US seeks extradition of former Honduran vice president

AP Tegucigalpa
Honduras' government says it has received a request from the United States for the extradition of former vice president and businessman Jaime Rosenthal, who is accused of money laundering.

Foreign Minister Arturo Corrales says the request should be sent to Honduras' Supreme Court by Tuesday.

Addressing a news conference yesterday, Corrales called the US extradition request for Rosenthal "bad news for the country."

On October 7, the US Treasury Department announced that Rosenthal, his son Yani Rosenthal and nephew Yankel Rosenthal along with the varied businesses of the Grupo Continental had been designated under the Kingpin Act. US prosecutors accuse them of laundering money for Central American drug traffickers.

The Rosenthals have denied the allegations. Yankel Rosenthal was arrested in Miami.
