: Alarmed by its report that many people using motors to pump water from pipelines are allowing the water to overflow and stagnate, causing dengue, the Municipal Corporation has decided to cut the period of supply from four to two hours a day.

Commissioner Rajan told PTI here today that a survey by the Municipal administration revealed that water is stagnating in many residential areas despite lack of rain and found it was due to water overflowing from overhead tanks in houses.

A medical team also found that this stagnation caused dengue mosquitoes to breed, posing a threat to residents.

Corporation officials have already seized 20 motors from various areas and residents were free to get them released through court, he said.

Another objective in seizing the motors was creating awareness among residents on allowing the water to overflow and get stagnated.

Whereever dengue was reported, it was due to water stagnation,he said, adding seizure of motors was only to create awareness as other methods failed to send the message home.

The corporation was getting 6.7MLD of water per day from Athur dam and nine MLD of water from Cauvery drinking water scheme. The water position would improve by May. As of now, the two hour drinking water supply would continue.
