The woman, arrested on charge of desecrating the Sikh's holy book, was thrashed by villagers today while police escorted her to the crime scene in Ghwaddi village here.

A team of police had taken accused Balwinder Kaur to the scene in the course of investigations.

Seeing the accused, the villagers attacked and started beating her, Ludhiana Commissioner of Police (CP) Parmraj Singh Umranangal said.

She was rescued by the police later.

Kaur, working as a sweeper at village gurdwara, was arrested yesterday along with a granthi (priest) of the shrine for the alleged desecration.

Kaur and Sikander Singh (granthi) were produced before a local court which sent them to two-day police custody.
