A 27-year-old woman was gangraped and murdered while her husband was severely beaten up by a gang of four robbers, who also looted them near here, police said today.

The brutal incident took place around 8.30 last night at Bharvas-Phata, near Lasalgaon town, about 50 km from here.

The couple were returning home in Kolgaon village in Sinnar taluka on motorcycle when they were waylaid by the robbers, they said.

The robbers tied the man (50) to a tree and gangraped his wife. They also looted the woman's gold ornaments and her husband's cash, altogether valued at around Rs 17,000, before fleeing, police said.

The woman died on the spot due to physical injuries and mental shock, they said.

The badly injured husband somehow reached the Lasalgaon police station and narrated his horror story. A police team rushed to the spot, shifted the woman's body to Nashik Civil Hospital and admitted her husband to the rural hospital at Niphad town.

A case of murder, rape, robbery and assault has been filed and manhunt launched for the culprits, police added.
