Women vendors at Khwairaband Bazar here today protested against alleged atrocities against students by the police yesterday during their demonstration at the office of state Education Minister M Okendro Singh in the state secretariat, the police said.

Students of eight higher secondary schools had come to the Manipur secretariat yesterday to surrender their text books to the minister in protest against the state government's 'failure' to take action against police personnel who killed a student Sapam Robinhood on July 8.

L Mema Devi, leader of the women vandors, alleged that the police lathicharged them and male members of the police manhandled girl students.

All shops and establishments were closed at main Imphal market, located at Thangal Bazar and Paona Bazar, due to the women vendors' protest-demonstration.
