A 22-year-old youth, who had been living at a government shelter home at Alipur in the outer Delhi, allegedly attempted suicide last night, police said today.
The youth, identified as Gitta had been living at the shelter home since long. He was in stress these days as the shelter authorities had been asking him to leave the place as he had become over age for stay at the shelter home. The maximum age limit to stay in there was 21 years, said a police official.
"He was apparently disturbed over the same issue of late. Last night, he allegedly tried to commit suicide by hanging himself in his room. Luckily, the attempt failed and he was rushed to LNJP hospital where he is stated to be out of danger," the official said.
According to the rules of the shelter home, children are allowed to stay in the shelter home till they complete 18 years.
In some cases, they get an extension of three years after attaining the upper age limit of 18, and Gitta was one such case.
"However, after he crossed that upper age limit as well, staff members had begun pressurising him to leave the facility, an issue which has been causing trouble to him as being an orphan, he had no place to go," the official added.
