Two engineering students were arrested for allegedly abducting and murdering a 17-year-old youth at Trimbakeshwar town in the district, police said today.

One of the two accused was a childhood friend of Goley colony resident Mohit Bawiskar, an IIT aspirant, who was kidnapped for ransom and was later killed by the duo, Nashik's Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Avinash Bargal told reporters here.

On October 14, Mohit's friend along with his aide, both studying in an engineering college and staying in Kathe Lane locality, asked him to accompany them on a picnic, the DCP said.

According to police, the friend, 17, was close to Mohit since childhood in Malegaon town and knew about his family's financial status. Therefore, he decided to kidnap him and seek ransom from his family, Bargal said.

As per the plan, the accused called Mohit to his room from where the three went on a motorcycle for a picnic to Trimbakeshwar, he said.

The duo then allegedly killed Mohit by hitting his head with a stone and hid the body under a bridge at the isolated Ganpatbari locality in Trimbakeshwar.

The accused returned to Nashik on October 15 and telephoned Mohit's father demanding Rs 20 lakh, Bargal said.

In the meantime, Mohit's father registered a missing complaint with the police.

On October 15, the Trimbakeshwar police found Mohit's body and informed the rural police headquarters at Nashik.

While searching for the victim, police checked footage of around 200 CCTVs installed at various routes of the Kumbh mela.

They also traced the location from where the two accused had called up Mohit's father and succeeded in identifying the culprits, leading to their arrests yesterday, the DCP said.

Further investigation was on in the case, he added.
