The Assam government has favoured the augmenting export facilities in the state for emerging as a vibrant focal point of export and the future corridor to south-east Asian countries.

The point was made by the state government at a meeting with the visiting sub-committee of the parliamentary standing committee on commerce here on Monday.

The unique locational advantage of being in proximity with south-east Asia offered Assam and other north-eastern states the potential to emerge as a strategic base for export of consumer goods to the vast markets in Myanmar, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries, an official release said here on Tuesday. The state government had already taken up the matter of opening border trade with Bangladesh with the centre.

While the centres clearance was awaited, a Bangladeshi delegation comprising representatives of trade, commerce and industries had visited the state in September last year and discussed with the state chief minister about strengthening bilateral trades among Bangladesh and Indias north-eastern states including Assam.
