The Sensex ended the day at 3781.49, up 24.71 points over the previous close of 3756.78. Opening the day at 3760.11, the Sensex moved up to an intra-day high of 3786.29 and fell to a low of 3739.09 before ending at 3781.49. The bourse recorded a turnover of Rs 662.49 crore.

According to marketmen, yesterday being the last day of settlement on the NSE, there was lot of short covering at the exchange which in turn contributed to the late surge on BSE. Brokers said that the impending oil price hike dampened trading sentiment for most part of the day.

In the A group, Century Textile and Indian Rayon witnessed a lot of activity following their bonus announcements. The Century scrip shot up to Rs 2600 immediately after the company announced a bonus ratio of 1:1. However, the scrip came under severe selling pressure and fell to Rs 2190 following disappointing results. Indian Rayons bonus ratio of 1:2 fell short of market expectations and the scrip lost Rs 10 over the previous close to end the day at Rs 392.75.

Among the pivotals, Bajaj Auto was a major gainer with the scrip closing at Rs 880, up Rs 22.25 over the previous days close. Most other pivotals too firmed up over their previous days closing levels.
