Playing with pearls

Moti Ankari
With fall upon us, the season's new wares are in full effect. We've already covered how you can best wear suede and checks, but when it comes to womenswear there's something more precious than fabric to consider this season: pearls. No longer just a necklace saved for a special occasion, these baubles are trending upwards in all sorts of new ways.

They were in force during the Fall-Winter '16 shows, including Gucci, which had a pearl-embroidered sweater; Dries van Noten, which featured a full pearl-stitched dress; and Miu Miu, which had models stomping down the runway accessorised with bepearled bags and classic necklaces. Now's your chance to reconsider this timeless accessory.

  • Pearls and dark-coloured garments are the perfect pairing. When styling, think proper backdrop for a sophisticated pop.
  • There's more versatility in pearls than you likely realise, far beyond their grandma and/or Jackie O stereotypes. Try wearing them with anything casual like denim or sneakers; you'll be surprised how easily you can pull them off.
  • Stack them. If you're going to wear a pearl necklace, pile it with multiple others, and in different colours, too.
  • Think beyond the strand and ear stud. You can wear pearls woven into your sweater and dress, and on accessories like bags and heels-just not all at once. A little pearl does go a long way.
